Asus are pretty much credited with the invention of the now ubiquitous netbook with their Asus EEE PC. Top of the pile in terms of performance and price at the moment is the 1005PE model. The Asus 1005PE combines great battery life (up to 11 hours under optimum conditions) and a great aesthetic design. The 1005PE has the upgraded Atom processor, Atom 450 which gives it a significant power boost over the N270 and N280 processors found in most other netbooks.
The battery life of notebook and netbook computers are always a grey area, the advertised battery life never seems to be what you expect. However with the 1005PE it is all it's cracked up to be. With heavy usage (constant internet browsing and even playing games at the same time) the 1005PE can last around 5 hours on a single charge. Turn on power-save mode, switch off the bluetooth and the wireless and you'll be computing for long after the 10 hour mark. Very impressive! |
The design of the 1005PE is another of its stand-out features. It has a glossy exterior, and it's so light and compact you can take it anywhere. The keyboard of the 1005PE is also worth mentioning. The chiclet style keyboard - where all the keys are separated apart from one another - provides an ergonomic feel with none of the keys being made smaller to compensate. Overall in long sessions of using the keyboard, this is a very important aspect of a netbook.
It's not just the technical components inside the Asus 1005PE that have been upgraded though - there's many aspects to the machine that you will notice and make use of every day. With built-in Bluetooth, the 1005PE makes it simple to transfer to and from your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone. Perfect for uploading photos or music to your netbook, or combine it with a bluetooth headset and listen to your music and movies without disturbing anyone else.
Also included in the 1005PE is the memory card reader, so you can take the card straight out of your camera and slot it into the netbook without having to find a cable to connect them up. The webcam built into the 1005PE just above the LED backlit display is another handy extra that used to be seen as a premium add-on.
