Buying a Wireless Router

A wireless router is amazing technology - it can make using technology in your house or at work easier with much more flexibility. Instead of being tied your desk with your notebook, imagine being able to move anywhere you wish in your space whilst still having an Internet connection – no need to reach for that Ethernet cable when you have wireless. Simply put, a wireless router will make your Internet connection wireless.
Choosing a Wireless Router
There are a few types of routers you can choose from. First, there is the form – wireless router by itself, or wireless router with built-in modem. Secondly, the type of wireless inside the wireless router – be it G, or N (including the type of N).
If you already have a modem that functions perfectly and only want to make your connection wireless, you only need a wireless router – this will run side by side with your current modem. However, if your current modem is having problems, or you do not have one; you need a wireless modem router. A wireless modem router is a standalone unit that is all in one.
The wireless type is simple, too. Firstly, there is ‘G’ wireless. This is wireless in a basic form, it is both slower and smaller-ranged than ‘N’ wireless. However, it is cheaper. As a general rule, if you are only going to use the wireless in the same room as the wireless router, and only for general use, G is adequate.
Where ‘N’ wireless enters is where you need to cover a larger space, such as multiple rooms. Or, if gaming or file transferring (including streaming) is needed (as wireless N is faster to handle these tasks). Wireless N is standard in most modern computers, but if your computer does not already have wireless N, there are adapters available to get wireless N for your computer - some as simple as a single small USB adapter.
Installing and Setting up a Wireless Router
It may be advanced technology, but it is actually very easy to install and use. If it is a standalone wireless router, it goes after your modem. But if it is a wireless router plus modem, that goes straight from your phone line. If this does not make much sense, do not worry: all wireless router models come with a manual or interactive disc that gives step by step instructions on how to install and setup your wireless router. Making it all very easy!
