What’s the difference between a modem and a router?

The terms “modem” and “router” are often used interchangeably. Both work together to connect your home or office computers and devices to the internet.

A modem serves as a bridge between your local Internet Service Provider (ISP) and the Internet. When you connect to WiFi, you’re essentially connecting to your router which then forwards the traffic between your Internet and computer.

A router creates a network between your devices. For example, in your home network, the router has one connection to the Internet and one connection to your private local network.
