What do I need for NBN? A Router or Modem router?

This is something we get asked a lot. The short answer. It depends on what type of NBN you have at your residence or business. Most can use just a router, as long as it has a WAN port at the back, but some may need a NBN modem router, which is commonly known as a VDSL modem router. For example, some NBN connections such as the following:

• FTTN
• FTTC
• FTTH

These connections are required to use a VDSL modem router for them to connect to the NBN service and function correctly. Whereas some of the following NBN connections require to use just an NBN router, or just a router as it’s commonly called:

• HFC
• FTTP
• Other Fibre

These connection require only a router with a WAN port to connect to your NBN service and you’re ready to go in most cases. Some connections may require a brief set up of the new modem router or router that you’ve purchased. You can always get help with that from either your ISP (internet service provider) or the manufacturer of the router or modem router that you’re using.
How do I find out what type of NBN service I have you may ask? Well, the easiest way is to hop onto www.NBNco.com.au and input your address, click “check” once you’ve found your address and the next page will tell you what type of NBN service is connected at your residence or business. What is Wi-Fi 6 and why do I need it?

What is a mesh router?

A mesh router consists of a series of “nodes”, the main one connects to your network as a normal router and the other nodes may be placed around your house or business wherever there’s a powerpoint available. They will then create a Wi-Fi network in between those points, allowing you for fast and easy internet access all around the nodes. Unlike traditional access points and range extenders, a mesh system creates 1 big network, rather than creating multiple networks for you to connect to, depending on where is closer. This allows you to walk freely anywhere, without having a drop of your internet access. It all works as 1 seamless connection.
