Modem routers and routers in 2021! What you need to know for your connection and NBN.

Modem routers and routers in 2021! What you need to know for your connection and NBN.

Unsure what modem router or router you’ll need to get your NBN up and running, at the best possible speeds? We got you covered! This read will let you know exactly what you need without getting into anything too technical.

First, there are many different types of NBN as you’ll see below, so, finding out what type of NBN you have or what type you will be getting in your area is the first essential step.

The easiest possible way to confirm this is to log onto www.nbnco.com.au, inputting your residential or business address and then clicking the “Check” button. This will let you know what type of NBN you have. Easy and simple!

Now that you have that information we can move forward to the exciting part! Finding a suitable modem router or router for your home or business!

Types of NBN

There are 3 different types of modem routers or routers you can get, depending on what type of NBN you may have.

Please be aware, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is usually optional. If you have a VoIP connection (telephone) with your NBN service, please see the ‘VoIP’ paragraph below. If you’re unsure if you have VoIP, please check with your internet service provider first before continuing.

Some NBN types are very straight forward and don’t require a lot of set up or special types of modems. These NBN types are:

  • FTTP (Fibre to the Premise)
  • FTTB (Fibre to the building)
  • HFC (Hybrid fibre-coaxial)
  • Fixed Wireless
  • Satellite (Sky Muster)

These specific NBN types do not need a modem function. You’ll just need to purchase a router with a WAN port and that’s all you require! Depending on your ISP, it could be a simple “plug and play” connection, or in most cases, a simple username/password set up.

Check out our routers by clicking on the thumbnail below.

On the other hand, you have the following types of NBN:

  • FTTN (Fibre to the node)
  • FTTC (Or FTTdp)
  • FTTH (Fibre to the home)

These types of NBN connections will require a ‘VDSL’ modem router in order for you to connect. The setup for these types of modem routers are very simple as well, nothing too complicated for anyone! If you’re unsure, in most cases your ISP (internet service provider) can guide you through the steps, or you may even call the manufacturers' support team of the modem/router you purchase and their trained professionals can guide you step-by-step.

Connections with VoIP

Any of the above NBN connections can have an optional feature called “VoIP”, which stands for “Voice over Internet Protocol”. This feature is installed if you had requested a phone line service with your NBN. In saying that, not many modem routers support VoIP, but that doesn’t mean they’re hard to find by any means.

‘VDSL’ modem routers with VoIP cover all types of NBN, so if you’re ever unsure what NBN type you’re getting in the future or if you may be moving (or move often), then this type of modem router will be perfect, as it will suit all NBN connections. Please see the last link below if you’re interested.
