The easiest 8 ways you can secure your home

The easiest 8 ways you can secure your home

Back in the 1700s, one of the first security systems for homes was a set of chimes that attach to your door that will ring as soon as the door is obstructed, notifying the homeowner that the door has been opened. These days, it’s a lot more sophisticated. We have anything from security cameras to door sensors to electronic locks and more. In this article, we’ll be going through the products that will help you secure your home as best as possible.

EZVIZ security camera

Security cameras

This is the most obvious entry on the list, however, it’s not as black and white as it seems. When people think of security cameras, most would think of buying a whole system, having someone do the drilling and installing for them, and then teach them about the system. Traditionally, this works and it’s what a lot of people may go for, but it’s definitely a costly solution and sometimes can cost $1000s just to set it up, not including any maintenance you may need down the track.

Alternatively, though, a lot of people are looking for simpler and cheaper solutions that will do just as good of a job if not better. This is where manufacturers such as EZVIZ, Arlo, or Eufy come in. Wireless camera systems are basically the pinnacle (at the moment) of DIY home security camera systems. They’re extremely easy to install and set up, all settings can be adjusted at your fingertips through their dedicated apps, no extra wiring required (which is great for those who are renting), cost a lot less than traditional security systems, are extremely effective, they have a bunch of special features such as two-way audio, motion detection, notifications through your phone, easy recording to storage or a cloud-based solution and finally, are extremely easy to maintain.

Eufy Smart Lock

Smart Locks

Most people would just use their standard deadbolt lock, but it’s not as secure as you may think. Traditional deadbolt locks use a key to open the door, it’s been like that for 100s of years, but just because it’s been around for a very long time, it doesn’t mean it’s the best solution. Smart locks are an extremely handy and easy-to-use solution. Smart locks, allow you to unlock your door in 3 ways. You can either unlock them with your smartphone through an app, you can use an electronic fob key to “tap” it on the smart lock to unlock the door or, you can simply punch in a number code using the keypad.

Smart locks are great much more convenient for you. You won’t have to worry about losing your key or forgetting it at home. Simply open up your app and unlock your door. Lost your phone today? That’s unfortunate, luckily you can still punch in the number combination and get through the door.

This can also be great for regular visitors, for example, a babysitter, your dog walker, friends, kids or whoever it is your trust to be in your home. You can create a password for them to let themselves into your home without hassle.

D-Link door sensor

Door Sensors

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, one of the oldest home security systems was a door chime to detect whenever it’s opened. These days, door sensors are much more sophisticated. Small, lightweight, and inexpensive, they monitor the opening and closing of your doors with rich notifications sent directly to their dedicated apps on your phone, so you can know right away as soon as it’s triggered. Not only just for your home security, but you can also use these for your smart home system. For example, if you were to set one of these sensors in the shed, along with a smart light. Once the sensor gets triggered, you can set it up so that it turns the light on. So not only can you use it for security, you can also use it for convenience and further automation of your home.

Window sensor

Window sensors

Window sensors are an important part of a comprehensive home security system. Much like the door sensors, they can promptly notify you if someone attempts to access your home through a window.

The way they work is with a switch and a magnet that’s attached to the window frame and the pane. When the window is closed, the magnet keeps the switch’s circuit intact. When the window is opened, it pulls the magnet away from the switch, opening the circuit and in turn, sends a signal to the main control panel to sound the alarm.

Yeelight Motion sensor

Motion sensors

Motion sensors in my opinion are one of the best tools for home security on the market. Their name is self-explanatory, they detect motion. I know what you’re thinking, “we’ve had these since the 80s”, and you’d be absolutely right, but we’re in 2021. Technology has long evolved since traditional motion sensors. Much like the other sensors, these can detect motion, send you notifications directly to your phone letting you know that it has. Couple this with a camera system and you’ll be able to view and investigate what’s happening right away. You can also connect this to your main security control panel to sound the alarm if needed.

Floodlight Eufy

Floodlights

Floodlights are fantastic, they light up a very dark area almost in an instant with extremely bright light. These days, they couple floodlights with wireless security cameras as 1 single product. So when motion is detected on these cameras, it will notify you, you can start viewing and recording straight away, while simultaneously turning on the floodlights for better visibility and also, it can help startle any unwanted visitors.

Netatmo Siren

Siren

What’s a security system without an alarm? Still a security system, but it could be a better one! When it comes to smart home security products, a lot of the time, for example with brands such as EZVIZ or Arlo have wireless camera systems and the base station they come with usually includes an in-built siren, that will sound the alarm if any activity is detected. Within their respective apps, while you’re viewing the cameras if needed, you can manually sound the alarm yourself. On the other hand, you can have separate alarms placed around the house that you can connect to your smart home security system that will automatically trigger them (when needed) based on the settings you provide them.

On the other hand, you have brands like Netatmo that have security cameras with facial recognition software. So if you buy a Netatmo camera and a separate siren, the camera can detect an unfamiliar face and instantly sound the alarm when you’re not home. These sirens also connect to your smartphone app so you’ll be also notified that an alarm has gone off.

Arlo Video Doorbell

Video doorbell

Finally, my favorite product out of the bunch is the video doorbells. Their concept is simple, yet extremely effective. A doorbell, when rung, shows you a video feed of who’s on the other side. That’s your very basic level of video doorbells, but they do a lot more than that too. Some video doorbells detect motion, so before anyone reaches your door, it’s already viewing the activity, which you’ll be notified of via the app.

Furthermore, you can remotely view these cameras and record through your app without having to be at home or connected to your Wi-Fi. So if you get a parcel delivered to your doorstep and in the scenario where someone sees this and decides to lift the parcel for themselves off your doorstep, you’ll have a video automatically recorded for you, which you can then forward to authorities or however you choose to deal with that specific case.
